What separates a good pouch shop from a big one

Catalogue size is the easiest number for a shop to advertise and the least reliable one to shop on. If the storefront is converting at checkout, the figure on the product page is an estimate that moves with the exchange rate and with whatever margin the payment processor takes, and the difference shows up on the card statement rather than on the order confirmation. Why the cheapest can is rarely the cheapest order

This is the single most useful thing on the page, and it takes ten seconds with a calculator. Suppose one shop sells a can for CA$2 less but charges CA$20 to deliver it. On a three-can order the cheaper can saves you CA$6 and the shipping costs you CA$20, so the order lands CA$14 more expensive. The headline price was true and the conclusion drawn from it was wrong.

Five things to check before you order anywhere

• What is actually in stock, not what is listed. A catalogue of three hundred listings is not three hundred cans you can buy. Compare only the items that can be added to a cart today — and prefer a shop that shows you which is which before you have filled the basket.
• The free-shipping threshold, in dollars you would have spent anyway. A CA$99 or CA$100 threshold is materially more useful than CA$125 or CA$140, and it matters most on the small orders most people actually place.

Reading a promotion honestly

One store in this comparison currently prices a large part of its range at CA$10 a can, which is well under everybody else and well under us. That is a real saving and it is also a temporary one, and the distinction matters more than it sounds. A promotion tells you what a shop is willing to charge this month to win a first order. An everyday price tells you what the second, fifth and twentieth order will cost. If you are buying one can, take the promotion. The same caution applies in the other direction to a shop that looks expensive. A CA$17 can with free delivery over CA$100 beats a CA$13 can with a CA$140 threshold on every order under about nine cans, and most orders are three or four. Neither number is dishonest; they are simply two different ways of arranging the same margin, and only one of them is arranged in your favour at the size you actually buy.

Loyalty points and money-back guarantees sit in the same category. Both are genuinely worth something and neither should be weighted heavily in a first decision, because both pay out on a future order that you have not yet decided to place. Points are a discount on the order after next; a guarantee is insurance against a problem that mostly does not occur. They are tie-breakers, not reasons.
