Nicotine pouch strengths, explained

Strength is printed on every can as milligrams per pouch. That single number is the one to compare across brands.

Cans of What do nicotine pouch strengths mean? from the Nicotine Pouches Canada range

Nicotine Pouches Canada · Updated · 5 min read

Strength is the milligrams of nicotine in one pouch. Roughly, up to 4 mg is light, 4 to 8 mg is regular, 8 to 14 mg is strong, and anything above that sits at the top of the range.

The four bands, and what falls in each

Across our current stock, the cans split into four distinct bands of strength, portion shape, and count. The first is ACE Cool Mint Light at 3 mg per pouch – a slim mint, 20 pouches per can, CA$0.70 a pouch. It's the only sub-4 mg option we carry, and its mint flavour scores 8 out of 10 in our tasting.

The other three bands are all 4 mg. NOIS gives you a slim portion with 30 pouches per can, dropping the cost to CA$0.47 a pouch – the lowest per-pouch cost among these four bands. Within NOIS, sting runs from Cherry ICE Light at 2 out of 10 to Extreme Light at 9 out of 10.

VELO's mini line holds 20 smaller pouches per can at CA$0.70 each. Three of its four flavours (Dark Cherry and Simply Spearmint among them) pack the 4 mg into a 0.42 g pouch, reaching 9.5 mg per gram – the highest concentration of any 4 mg can in this group. XQS also uses slim portions at 20 per can and CA$0.70 a pouch, but with fruit-forward flavours like Tropical Light (fruit 8 out of 10) and a uniform 8.0 mg/g concentration.

mg per pouch versus mg per gram

All label strengths on our shelf are given in milligrams per pouch, and they span every band we carry. That figure is the total nicotine in a single pouch, so a 4 mg pouch delivers 4 mg whether it comes as a slim or a mini. The number is the same total dose regardless of pouch size.

Milligrams per gram is a separate measure: it divides that same pouch dose by the pouch's weight. Since our measured pouch weights run from 0.4 g to 0.8 g, the same 4 mg dose can be as diffuse as 5.0 mg/g in a heavy 0.8 g pouch (KILLA Flash Light) or as concentrated as 9.5 mg/g in a light 0.42 g pouch. So concentration varies more than total nicotine across cans with the same label strength.

When you compare cans, look at mg per pouch to know how much nicotine you'll get from each pouch. Check mg per gram only if you want to know how tightly packed that nicotine is. The two numbers answer different questions.

How strength interacts with portion size

The same 4 mg dose arrives in different physical shapes. VELO's minis are either 0.42 g or 0.5 g, so the dose is packed into a small, rounded pouch that sits close to the gum. XQS and NOIS slims use a 0.5 g pouch that runs longer along the lip, spreading the dose over more surface area. The mini is more discreet; the slim is more noticeable.

Sting is a separate axis from concentration. VELO Simply Spearmint Mini packs 4 mg into 0.42 g (9.5 mg/g) yet rates sting 4 out of 10, while XQS Blueberry Mint Light Slim rates sting 6 out of 10 from a less concentrated 8.0 mg/g pouch. So a denser pouch doesn't necessarily sting more; flavour and formulation matter.

Let the pouch shape guide you. If you want something that hugs the gum and disappears in your mouth, the VELO minis are the option here. If you want a pouch you can feel running lengthwise, the NOIS and XQS slims give you that, and both come in at 4 mg. Pick by the physical feel, then match flavour from the tasting notes.

Where to start

For newcomers, start with a can that rates low on sting. NOIS Cherry ICE Light and NOIS Wintergreen Light both rate sting 2 out of 10, and VELO Dark Cherry Mini matches that. They deliver the 4 mg dose without a strong burn. If you want a cooler sensation, NOIS Cool Strong Light rates 7 out of 10 on mint and 6 out of 10 on sting.

Match the flavour to what you already like. For fruit-forward, choose XQS Tropical Light (fruit 8 out of 10) or VELO Dark Cherry Mini (fruit 8). For straight mint, ACE Cool Mint Light scores 8 out of 10 on mint. Our tasting scores sit alongside each product in the catalogue, so you can compare before buying.

Also consider how much nicotine each can holds, not just per pouch. A NOIS can holds 120 mg of nicotine because it has 30 pouches; a 20-pouch VELO or XQS can holds 80 mg. If you want a can to last, the NOIS range gives you more total nicotine for the same CA$14.00 price. Since orders over CA$150 ship free, buying several cans at once is how most people find their regular.

Common questions

What is a good strength to start with?

The lightest band, up to about 4 mg per pouch, is where most first cans sit.

Why do two brands label the same mg differently?

The words on the can are marketing terms, not a standard. Compare the milligram figure instead.

Does a bigger pouch mean more nicotine?

Not necessarily. Portion size describes the pouch's dimensions; the milligram figure describes its nicotine.

Our full catalogue spans single cans across dozens of brands, with label strengths from 2.8 mg to 4 mg per pouch. That is the entire range; within it, the meaningful differences are format and taste, not nicotine weight.

Pouch counts run from 15 to 40. Twenty is the standard, in 648 of the 1,105 cans; the rest hold more or fewer. If you want a can that lasts longer for the same price, reach for one of the 30-pouch cans, such as the NOIS range, which holds 30 slim pouches at CA$14.00.

Every can we stock has a fact sheet with a sting score and flavour-intensity scores out of 10. That gives you a direct comparison between any two products, regardless of pouch shape or brand. It is the quickest way to find a profile that matches what you already enjoy.

Nicotine pouches vs snus: what actually differs

Snus and nicotine pouches share a format and nothing else. Snus is ground tobacco leaf, portioned moist, and it is a tobacco product. An all-white nicotine pouch replaces the leaf with plant fibre and adds nicotine separately, which is why it is described as tobacco-free. The pouch, the placement and the duration are the same; the contents are not.

Can you eat or drink with a nicotine pouch in?

A pouch sits under the upper lip and stays there while you talk, drink and eat. It is not chewed and it is not swallowed. Hot drinks are the one thing that noticeably changes the experience, because warmth moves the flavour release along faster.

Mint, menthol and 'freeze': what the words on the can mean

Mint, menthol and the various 'ice', 'freeze' and 'frost' names describe different things. Mint is the flavour of the plant; menthol is the compound that produces the cold sensation and can be added without mint flavour at all; 'freeze' and 'ice' are brand names for a higher cooling load rather than a defined level. Two cans both labelled 'ice mint' can differ substantially.
