Cans of How should nicotine pouches be stored? from the Nicotine Pouches Canada range

Keep cans sealed and somewhere cool. Most carry a best-before date, and on the majority of brands the lid doubles as a sealed compartment for used pouches.

Storing a can and keeping it fresh

Keeping a can fresh starts with picking the right size. On our shelf, 20-pouch cans are the standard. A 20-pouch can like ACE Cool Mint Light (3 mg, slim) or VELO Bright Spearmint Mini (4 mg, mini) suits someone who uses pouches occasionally and wants a can that won't outstay its welcome.

If you finish a can in a few days, a NOIS can such as NOIS Blueberry ICE Light (4 mg, slim) holds 30 pouches — ten more than the typical 20-pouch can — for the same CA$14.00. That works out to CA$0.47 a pouch versus CA$0.70 for 20-pouch ACE, VELO, and XQS cans. The higher per-pouch price on the smaller can buys variety and a shorter cycle.

These come as single cans, so you can match the count to your pace without committing to a multi-pack that might sit partially used.

Dry versus moist pouches

Moisture isn't on any spec sheet, but pouch weight and nicotine concentration are. VELO Bright Spearmint Mini is 4 mg in a 0.5 g pouch (8.0 mg/g); VELO Dark Cherry Mini is 4 mg in a 0.42 g pouch (9.5 mg/g). The same dose in less material means a more concentrated, smaller pouch. NOIS and XQS slims all sit at 8.0 mg/g in 0.5 g pouches. Across 4 mg pouches we stock, concentration spans 5.0 mg/g (KILLA Niclab Flash Light, 0.8 g) to 9.5 mg/g (VELO Dark Cherry Mini).

Sting scores are the closest thing we list to how a pouch makes itself known. Within NOIS, scores run from 2/10 (Cherry ICE Light) to 9/10 (Extreme Light), both 4 mg slims — mg alone won't tell you the burn. On the mild end, XQS Black Cherry Light sits at 3/10 and VELO Dark Cherry Mini at 2/10. Choose by sting score, not by mg; for immediate bite, look for 8s and 9s.

For a first can, a 0.5 g slim with a sting around 4 or 5 (ACE Cool Mint Light or XQS Citrus Cooling Light) is a moderate start. If you prefer a small, high-concentration pouch, VELO Dark Cherry Mini pairs 0.42 g with 9.5 mg/g, the highest concentration we stock.

How long a pouch is designed to last

A pouch's intended lifespan is visible in its portion type. Our VELO cans are all minis — small, light pouches like VELO Sour Lime Mini and VELO Simply Spearmint Mini that sit discreetly and are easy to ignore. The ACE, NOIS, and XQS lines are all slims, with a larger, more noticeable profile. If you plan a long, quiet sit, the minis are the natural fit; if you want a pouch you stay aware of, a slim is the one.

Strength sets the other boundary. ACE Cool Mint Light is the only 3 mg pouch we stock, and it's a slim — so the lightest dose comes in a standard-size format. The NOIS, VELO, and XQS cans we carry are all 4 mg, which means that dose is available as a mini (VELO) or as a slim (NOIS and XQS). The choice is about how present you want the pouch to feel.

For a lighter, longer session, ACE Cool Mint Light is a single choice at 3 mg. For the same 4 mg in a smaller form, pick a VELO mini. For 4 mg with more bulk, a NOIS or XQS slim gives you a more definite presence. Match the pouch's design to the time you have, and the experience paces itself.

What is actually inside a pouch

The mg per pouch sets the dose, but the can's total nicotine depends on the pouch count. A 30-pouch NOIS can at 4 mg holds 120 mg; a 20-pouch VELO can at 4 mg holds 80 mg. So a NOIS can is half again as strong per can, even though each pouch is the same 4 mg.

Our tasting sheets break flavor into fruit and mint scores. XQS Blueberry Mint Light Slim is fruit 7, mint 5 — berry leads, mint follows. NOIS Mango ICE Light is fruit 6, mint 3 — mango dominates and the cool is barely present. If you want the cool to lead, NOIS Cool Strong Light scores mint 7. These two numbers tell you which taste arrives first, and they separate 4 mg pouches that look identical on the label.

A third score, sting, describes the mouth feel and runs independently of nicotine. NOIS Wintergreen Light stings 2/10, while NOIS Mango ICE Light stings 5/10 — both are 4 mg slims. Use the sting score to gauge how sharp the pouch sits, not the mg. Pick a 2 or 3 for a gentle pouch, a 5 or higher for a noticeable bite.

What we stock, and where to start

Across our brands, the single cans we stock cover every strength band per pouch. The more useful numbers are the fruit, mint, and sting scores on each listing — they tell you how a pouch tastes and how sharp it feels.

In the fruit family, XQS Tropical Light is a 4 mg slim with fruit 8/10 and sting 4/10. VELO Sour Lime Mini is a 4 mg mini with fruit 7/10 and sting 5/10. Pick XQS for a sweet, mixed-fruit pouch; pick VELO for citrus with a bit more edge.

In mint, VELO Bright Spearmint Mini (4 mg mini) scores mint 6/10 and sting 4/10, so it's a clean spearmint. NOIS Blueberry ICE Light (4 mg slim) scores mint 5/10 and sting 6/10, and it's flavoured berry, so you get mint with a berry undertone and a stronger sting. Start with the VELO for simplicity, or the NOIS if you want a more complex, sharper mint.

Common questions

What is the difference between a dry and a moist pouch?

Dry and moist refer to how much liquid the pouch carries. A dry pouch releases flavour more slowly and is less noticeable at first; a moist pouch starts faster.

How long does a nicotine pouch last?

Manufacturers generally suggest keeping a pouch in for somewhere between 20 and 60 minutes, and the pouch is discarded rather than swallowed.

What is in a nicotine pouch?

A nicotine pouch holds four things: a plant-fibre or cellulose filler, nicotine, flavourings, and a sweetener. There is no tobacco leaf in the pouch, which is why the contents are white rather than brown.

We ship across Canada from our shop in British Columbia. Orders over CA$150 ship free, so a multiple-can order saves on shipping. Orders placed in the morning leave our British Columbia warehouse the same business day, with tracking on every parcel.

Every can we stock has a measured fact sheet with sting, mint, and fruit scores out of 10. These scores separate cans that look alike on the label: NOIS Cherry ICE Light is fruit 8/10 and sting 2/10, while NOIS Extreme Light is the same 4 mg but stings 9/10. Use the scores to gauge how a pouch feels before you open it.

The brands come from different manufacturers — ACE from Ministry of Snus, NOIS from NOIS.WORLD, VELO from BAT, XQS from XQS international AB. That's why pouch sizes differ even among 4 mg cans. When you're stocking up, check the per-gram nicotine rather than just the mg per pouch.

Nicotine pouches vs snus: what actually differs

Snus and nicotine pouches share a format and nothing else. Snus is ground tobacco leaf, portioned moist, and it is a tobacco product. An all-white nicotine pouch replaces the leaf with plant fibre and adds nicotine separately, which is why it is described as tobacco-free. The pouch, the placement and the duration are the same; the contents are not.

Can you eat or drink with a nicotine pouch in?

A pouch sits under the upper lip and stays there while you talk, drink and eat. It is not chewed and it is not swallowed. Hot drinks are the one thing that noticeably changes the experience, because warmth moves the flavour release along faster.

Mint, menthol and 'freeze': what the words on the can mean

Mint, menthol and the various 'ice', 'freeze' and 'frost' names describe different things. Mint is the flavour of the plant; menthol is the compound that produces the cold sensation and can be added without mint flavour at all; 'freeze' and 'ice' are brand names for a higher cooling load rather than a defined level. Two cans both labelled 'ice mint' can differ substantially.
