How many pouches are in a can?

Pouch counts are not standard across the category. A can is most often 20 pouches, but 22, 27 and 30 all appear on our shelf, which is why the price on the front of a can tells you less than it looks like it does.

Most often 20. It is not standardised, though — cans of 22, 27 and 30 are all on our shelf — and the count is what turns a shelf price into a price per pouch, which is the only figure that compares between brands.

Why the count is not standard

Pouch counts run from 20 to 30 per can, with 20 the most common by a wide margin. Single cans cost between CA$12.00 and CA$14.00, so the price alone won't tell you how many pouches you're getting.

For example, NOIS Blueberry ICE Light and ACE Cool Mint Light both cost CA$14.00. NOIS holds 30 slim pouches, or CA$0.47 each; ACE holds 20, or CA$0.70 each. Same money, half again as many pouches from NOIS.

Count isn't the only variable. VELO Bright Spearmint Mini, also CA$14.00 for 20, is a mini portion rather than slim. And ACE is 3 mg per pouch, while NOIS and VELO are 4 mg, so a NOIS can carries 120 mg of nicotine and an ACE can 60 mg. Which you choose depends on whether you prioritize cost per pouch, pouch fit, or nicotine per pouch.

What it does to the price

The per-pouch price splits cleanly: the six NOIS cans we stock are CA$0.47 a pouch, while every 20-pouch can we have full numbers on—ACE, VELO, and XQS—comes to CA$0.70. So the 30-pouch NOIS can is the only way below CA$0.70 a pouch in our measured range.

But the same per-pouch price hides different nicotine totals. ACE Cool Mint Light is 3 mg per pouch at 6.0 mg/g, so its 20-pouch can carries 60 mg of nicotine. VELO Bright Spearmint Mini, also 20 pouches at CA$0.70, is 4 mg per pouch at 8.0 mg/g and carries 80 mg. XQS 20-pouch cans also carry 80 mg, while VELO Dark Cherry Mini reaches that same 80 mg with just 8.4 g of material because it is 9.5 mg/g.

So if you are comparing value by count, NOIS wins. If you are comparing value by nicotine per can, the 20-pouch cans are not interchangeable—ACE is the lightest, VELO Dark Cherry is the most concentrated, and the rest sit between them.

Portion size is a separate thing again

Portion size describes the physical pouch, not the nicotine. The slims we stock—ACE, NOIS, XQS—all share a 0.5g pouch, so the weight is the same whichever of those brands you pick. The VELO minis are not uniform: Bright Spearmint Mini is 0.5g, while Dark Cherry Mini is 0.42g.

Because both VELO minis are 4 mg per pouch, the difference in weight means the same dose arrives in a lighter pouch with Dark Cherry. Pouch weight and strength are independent, so choosing a mini doesn't mean giving up strength.

Across our whole shelf, measured pouch weights run from 0.4g to 0.8g. The 0.42g VELO minis sit near the light end, making them the lightest minis we carry. If you want a consistent weight across flavours, the 0.5g slims are the middle ground, and they don't vary between ACE, NOIS, and XQS.

Checking before you buy

The count tells you how many pouches, but not how much the can weighs. The 30-pouch NOIS cans we stock hold 15 g of material, while the 20-pouch ACE and XQS cans hold 10 g. That difference matters if you keep a can in a pocket or bag all day: the NOIS is half again as heavy, and you get half again as many pouches from it.

Among the 20-pouch cans, weight varies too. VELO Bright Spearmint Mini is 10 g, but VELO Dark Cherry Mini is 8.4 g because its pouches are lighter. So two cans with the same 20-pouch count can feel noticeably different in the hand.

Before you buy, check the pouch weight alongside the count. If a light can matters more than extra pouches, VELO Dark Cherry Mini is the lightest of these. If you want the most pouches per can, the 30-count NOIS is your option. The count is the quickest number to compare; the weight tells you what that count actually feels like.

Is 20 pouches per can standard?

It is the most common count, not a standard. Brands package 22, 27 and 30 as well, and the figure is printed on the can.

Do bigger cans work out cheaper?

Per pouch, usually yes. Divide the can price by the pouch count and compare that number rather than the shelf price.

Does a can with more pouches hold weaker pouches?

No. Count and strength are labelled separately and brands mix them freely.

Pouch count alone won't tell you the strength. Label strengths on our shelf span a wide range, and even among cans sharing one labelled dose, concentration varies with pouch size. Among the 4 mg cans, VELO Dark Cherry Mini is 9.5 mg/g (0.42 g pouches) and the least concentrated is KILLA Niclab Flash Light at 5.0 mg/g (0.8 g pouches). Both are 4 mg per pouch, but one delivers that dose in a much smaller, denser pouch.

To compare any two cans, use three numbers: pouch count, mg per pouch, and pouch weight. Count times mg gives the total nicotine per can; mg divided by weight gives concentration. That lets you compare a 20-pouch can with a 30-pouch can on the same terms, instead of assuming the bigger count means more strength.
