How Much Nicotine Is in Snus Pouches? A Brand-by-Brand Guide

Nicotine strengths are labelled in mg per pouch, but pouch weight, format and flavour all change how that number feels. Here's what the labels mean, what's legal in Canada, and the exact figures for every can we stock.

Reading the numbers on a nicotine pouch

Nicotine pouch strengths are usually expressed in milligrams per pouch. This is the number printed on the can and the one used for regulatory limits. But it is only one of three useful figures. Because pouches weigh different amounts, the concentration can vary even when the per-pouch figure is the same.

Take our current stock. ACE Cool Mint Light is 3 mg in a 0.5 g pouch, which is 6.0 mg of nicotine per gram. NOIS, XQS and several VELO pouches are 4 mg in 0.5 g, giving 8.0 mg/g. Other VELO minis pack 4 mg into 0.42 g, giving 9.5 mg/g. Aprés spans both: the 4 mg lights use 0.55 g pouches (7.3 mg/g), while the 3.2 mg minis use 0.4 g (8.0 mg/g).

The third figure is the total nicotine in a can. Multiply mg per pouch by pouches per can. ACE at 3 mg × 20 is 60 mg per can. Aprés 4 mg lights are 80 mg; the 3.2 mg minis are 64 mg. NOIS at 4 mg × 30 is 120 mg. VELO and XQS at 4 mg × 20 are 80 mg. Can weights follow: ACE and XQS hold 10 g of material, most Aprés 11 g (minis 8 g), NOIS 15 g, and the VELO minis 8.4 g or 10 g.

Why the same milligram can feel different

The size and shape of a pouch change how nicotine is absorbed. A larger pouch has more surface area touching the gum, so more nicotine gets delivered over the session. Mini pouches (roughly 0.3–0.5 g) sit compactly and are typically optimised for 15–25 minutes. Slim pouches, the global standard, run 30–60 minutes. Large formats can go past 75 minutes. We carry slim ACE, Aprés, NOIS and XQS, plus mini VELO and a few mini Aprés.

Moisture matters too. Moist pouches release nicotine almost immediately and produce more noticeable liquid (drip) under the lip. Dry pouches need saliva to activate, so the release is more gradual and the session feels longer. The total nicotine is the same either way.

Flavour can change how strong a pouch feels. Menthol activates the same cold receptor as temperature, which the brain registers as sharpness and intensity. This is why a mint pouch can feel stronger than a fruit pouch at the same milligram level. Our tasting notes reflect this: NOIS Extreme Light is 4 mg but scored sting 9/10, while VELO Dark Cherry is also 4 mg and scored sting 2/10. Nicotine salts, which most modern pouches use, are also smoother than freebase nicotine.

Other everyday factors affect the experience. The first pouch of the day generally feels the strongest, and hydration and food intake influence how the pouch performs. None of these change the label; they just explain why the label alone isn't a reliable guide to how a pouch will feel.

Canadian rules and what's available

Health Canada restricts personal imports of nicotine pouches to 60 cans per 90 days and a maximum of 4 mg of nicotine per pouch. Imports must be for personal use only; reselling is not allowed. Labelled dose varies widely from one can to the next, which is why the milligram figure matters more than the word printed beside it.

In other markets, stronger pouches exist. ZYN, for instance, is sold in strengths from 1.5 mg up to 13.5 mg outside Canada. Canadian buyers cannot legally bring those higher strengths in under the current limit, so our selection stays within the 4 mg ceiling. Internationally, popular brands include Pablo, Killa, VELO, ZYN and ZEUS; in Canada, the limit shapes what we stock.

For customers in the United States, the federal purchasing age is 21. In Delaware, there is no statewide flavour ban on nicotine pouches, and the state's vapour product excise tax does not currently apply to pouches; legislative proposals there, such as a product directory, have targeted vapour products rather than nicotine pouches. In the US market, ZYN is one of the most widely recognised pouch brands, and ON! and Clew are also available.

Snus vs. nicotine pouches

The phrase "snus pouches" is often used loosely, but snus and nicotine pouches are different products. Snus is a smokeless tobacco product from Sweden, placed under the upper lip, and it contains tobacco leaf. Its flavours are typically tobacco-forward, sometimes with bergamot or licorice. Snus has a long Scandinavian tradition but is more restricted or unfamiliar outside that region.

Nicotine pouches are tobacco-leaf-free. They use plant-based fibres, nicotine, flavourings and sweeteners. That opens up flavours like mint, citrus, berry, coffee, cola and tropical blends. They also tend to be white, slim, low-drip and low-odour, which makes them more discreet in public or work settings.

Everything we stock is a nicotine pouch, not snus. None of the products in this article contain tobacco leaf. Pouches are meant to be placed between the upper lip and gum, not chewed or swallowed.

What we stock, brand by brand

Ace — manufactured by Ministry of Snus — is represented in our catalogue by ACE Cool Mint Light: 3 mg per pouch in a slim portion, 20 pouches per can, CA$14.00. It is mint flavoured, with 6.0 mg/g, 60 mg nicotine per can, and works out to CA$0.70 per pouch. Our tasting panel rates it sting 5/10 and mint 8/10.

Après (made by Après Nicotine AB and BAT) covers the widest range. We stock 13 cans, all CA$14.00 for 20 pouches, with strengths from 3.2 mg to 4 mg. The 4 mg lights include No.10 Tangerine Spritz and No.11 Bananas; they use 0.55 g pouches (7.3 mg/g), hold 11 g per can and carry 80 mg nicotine. The 3.2 mg minis, including No.13 Mochaccino and No.15 Hugo Spritz, use 0.4 g pouches (8.0 mg/g), 8 g per can and 64 mg nicotine. The Aprés Zero line — No.2 Mint, No.5 Ice Tea Peach, No.9 Raspberry Liquorice and No.12 Blueberry — are slim pouches with 20 per can and 11 g of material; they fall within the 3.2–4 mg range. Flavours across the range are Berry, Mint, Peach, Licorice, Citrus, Banana, Coffee, Elderflower, Guava, Mixed Fruits and Passionfruit.

NOIS (NOIS.WORLD) is uniformly 4 mg in a slim portion, but with 30 pouches per can rather than 20. All six flavours — Blueberry ICE, Cherry ICE, Cool Strong, Extreme, Mango ICE and Wintergreen — are 0.5 g (8.0 mg/g), 15 g per can, 120 mg nicotine, and CA$0.47 per pouch. Sting scores range from 2/10 (Cherry ICE and Wintergreen) to 9/10 (Extreme), while mint and fruit scores vary by flavour.

VELO (BAT) is a mini-format brand at 4 mg, 20 pouches per can, CA$14.00. Bright Spearmint Mini uses 0.5 g pouches (8.0 mg/g, 10 g per can); the other three minis — Dark Cherry, Simply Spearmint and Sour Lime — use 0.42 g pouches (9.5 mg/g, 8.4 g per can). All four carry 80 mg nicotine per can. Tasting scores put the stings between 2 and 5, with fruit or mint scores from 5 to 8.

XQS (XQS international AB) is another all-4 mg slim line, 20 pouches per can, CA$14.00. Black Cherry Light, Blueberry Mint Light, Citrus Cooling, Tropical Light and Wintergreen Light all use 0.5 g pouches (8.0 mg/g), 10 g per can, 80 mg nicotine. Per-pouch cost is CA$0.70. Sting scores are 3–6 out of 10, and fruit/mint scores range from 2 to 8.

How to choose a strength

Most guidance suggests starting at 2–4 mg, even if you are coming from smoking. Give yourself a week at a lower strength before moving up. If a pouch no longer satisfies you for a full session, the first change to make is not necessarily a higher milligram: moving from mini to slim at the same strength increases surface area and delivery, which may be enough.

Flavour is a useful tuning tool. Because mint and menthol amplify perceived intensity, switching from a mint to a fruit or coffee flavour at the same strength can feel like a step down even though the nicotine content is unchanged. Our tasting scores make this concrete: XQS Citrus Cooling rates sting 4/10, XQS Wintergreen 5/10, and NOIS Extreme Light 9/10, all at 4 mg.

Pay attention to session length. Mini formats are usually done in 15–25 minutes, slim in 30–60, and large formats can run longer. The majority of nicotine releases in the first 20–30 minutes; leaving a pouch in beyond that doesn't draw out more nicotine, it just extends the time the pouch is in place.

There is no universal right strength. Two products at the same milligram can feel very different because of format, moisture, flavour and nicotine type. The practical route is to start low, try a few brands at the same strength, and adjust based on whether the session feels satisfying from start to finish.

Nicotine pouches vs snus: what actually differs

Snus and nicotine pouches share a format and nothing else. Snus is ground tobacco leaf, portioned moist, and it is a tobacco product. An all-white nicotine pouch replaces the leaf with plant fibre and adds nicotine separately, which is why it is described as tobacco-free. The pouch, the placement and the duration are the same; the contents are not.

Can you eat or drink with a nicotine pouch in?

A pouch sits under the upper lip and stays there while you talk, drink and eat. It is not chewed and it is not swallowed. Hot drinks are the one thing that noticeably changes the experience, because warmth moves the flavour release along faster.

Mint, menthol and 'freeze': what the words on the can mean

Mint, menthol and the various 'ice', 'freeze' and 'frost' names describe different things. Mint is the flavour of the plant; menthol is the compound that produces the cold sensation and can be added without mint flavour at all; 'freeze' and 'ice' are brand names for a higher cooling load rather than a defined level. Two cans both labelled 'ice mint' can differ substantially.
