LOOP alternatives in Canada: how they compare

What follows is a comparison rather than a list of recommendations: 3 brands we hold in British Columbia, measured against the LOOP can on the three things that separate a real substitute from a near-miss — nicotine per pouch, portion format, and the flavour range each one actually covers.

What is in a LOOP can

The 1,105 single cans we stock are labelled from 1.5 mg to 50 mg per pouch, so a LOOP alternative here can be milder or a good deal stronger. What varies alongside the dose is pouch count and flavour.

Pouch count changes the value. NOIS gives you 30 pouches per can for CA$14.00, or CA$0.47 a pouch. SYX and ZEUS both give 20 pouches for the same CA$14.00, or CA$0.70 a pouch. If you use several a day, NOIS is the better cost per pouch.

Flavour separates them further. For a strong mint, NOIS Cool Strong Light (sting 6, mint 7) and ZEUS Arctic Freeze Light (sting 7, mint 7) both deliver. For fruit, NOIS Cherry ICE Light (fruit 8, mint 2) and ZEUS Bubble Gum Light (fruit 7, mint 1) are the sweet end. Pick by the tasting notes rather than the brand.

The alternatives, ranked

How they line up on strength

Strength on a can is labelled two ways: milligrams per pouch and milligrams per gram. Pouch weight is why the two don't line up across brands. The densest pouch we carry is VELO Dark Cherry Mini at 9.5 mg/g in a 0.42 g pouch; the least dense is KILLA Niclab Flash Light at 5.0 mg/g in a 0.8 g pouch. Both are 4 mg per pouch, but the VELO delivers that nicotine in less than half the material. SYX, at 2.8 mg in a 0.7 g pouch, works out to 4.0 mg/g — so it's the mildest on both counts.

The labelled number also doesn't tell you how hard a pouch stings. Our tasting data separates the two. SYX Peppermint Light is only 2.8 mg but rates sting 7/10, while ZEUS Bubble Gum is 4 mg yet stings 3/10. So if you're after a strong hit but want to stay at the lowest label strength, SYX Peppermint Light is the one to try; if you want a 4 mg pouch that goes down easy, ZEUS Bubble Gum fits. Check the sting rating alongside the mg figure.

• Normal — 4.2–6 mg per pouch (76 cans listed, in stock or not). The everyday strength — enough to feel without taking over the afternoon.
• Strong — 6.3–12 mg per pouch (246 cans listed, in stock or not). A firm kick and a real tingle. Not a first pouch.
• Extra Strong — 12.5–20 mg per pouch (95 cans listed, in stock or not). Heavy hitters for a tolerance that is already built.
• Super Strong — 22.2–30 mg per pouch (70 cans listed, in stock or not). Serious doses, for a tolerance that is already well established.
• Extreme — 32.5–50 mg per pouch (64 cans listed, in stock or not). The highest doses we list. Far above any Canadian-authorized product.

Flavour and format

All three main substitutes — NOIS, SYX and ZEUS — come in slim pouches, so the format is close to what you're used to. The difference is in the pouch weight: NOIS and ZEUS are 0.5 g, while SYX is 0.7 g. That makes SYX feel fuller under the lip; the other two sit lighter and flatter.

The flavour line-ups are where the alternatives separate most clearly. SYX has the most unusual range: Icy Cola Light is a cola-mint hybrid, and Original Light is a tobacco-flavoured option the other two don't offer. ZEUS goes sweet with Bubble Gum Light and Epic Berry Light. NOIS stays conventional with Cool Strong Light (mint), Mango ICE Light and Wintergreen Light, which blends fruit and mint.

So if you want something out of the ordinary, start with SYX. If a sweet, candy-like pouch is more your style, ZEUS is the best match. NOIS works as the straight swap: familiar flavours and a light slim pouch, with a straightforward mint or fruit choice.
